SkillsUSA: Champions at Work is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel. SkillsUSA improves the quality of America’s skilled workforce through a structured program of citizenship, leadership, employability, technical and professional skills training. SkillsUSA enhances the lives and careers of students, instructors and industry representatives as they strive to be champions at work.

On Thursday, March 17, nine students from Statesboro High School went to the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta to showcase their skills and compete against the best in the state at the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference. Bryce Findley, senior at Statesboro High School competing in Industrial Motor Control, was sponsored by The Sack Company. This is a three day expo where over 1000 students compete in 90+ events with career and technical application. To qualify for the state level in some events, students in each of the eight regions must win 1st or 2nd place. Due to the scale and scope of certain events, there is no region level competition and competitors begin at the state level. At the awards banquet on Saturday, only the top three places are announced. Findley was awarded second place in his competition.

To reach the national level competition, students must place 1st at the state level. The national competition is held in Louisville, Kentucky in a venue the size of 20 football fields. However, placing 1st isn’t an easy task. Each student faces off against as many as 16-20 of the best in the state of Georgia. For most every event, students are scored on professionalism and safety along with other parameters surrounding their event. Each student (pictured above) spent countless hours after school working on bettering their skills, getting ready to put themselves in the eye of the public, and compete against the best. Regardless of the outcome, they represented their parents, school, and community with honor, dignity, and hard work. This is why they are Champions.
